simply, each team had a flag, be it a hand towel or something like that, each team has to have there flag in the area/square but the goal of the game is to gain the other teams flag whilst keeping your own. we played it at my youth group in a fairly open field with trees to be used for cover. it was quite fun because it was dark, and you couldn't quite see everyone in the distance, my team split up and myself and a friend of mine were the runners, it was up to us to find and retrieve the flag, while the rest defended. i've also heard this can be played over an entire school, with half a senior year on each team.

the way my youth group plays this is to split up the playing area in half.
so there is some sort of line, real or imaginary in the middle.one team on each side.
each team finds a spot to hide their flag, but it must be visible to the other team if they are in the vicinity of where it is. each team also chooses a spot to be their jail.
the aim is the same to get the other teams flag. you need to get it over your teams line to win.
when you go over the line of your side the other team can catch you. if you get caught they then take you to their jail. so as well as trying to get the flag you will be rescuing your team from jail so that you have as many players as possible.
I have found that this game is the most fun when played outdoors in an area with lots of trees and such, but it is still fun inside.
